Loving oatmeal porridge is a big part of making a small
footprint with your diet. It also ensures you don't $nack all morning.
And it's healthy! Oatmeal may help lower cholesterol and reduce the
risk of heart disease. The soluble fiber in oatmeal makes you feel full
longer. Oatmeal contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals and
antioxidants and is a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates and
iron. Plus you're going to add apples, raisins and honey, and maybe
some yogurt or nuts/seeds. It's a perfect start to your day.
The
idea of making it weekly and reheating it may not appeal to you if you
haven't tried it. Believe me, it's even better reheated!
Lately I've simplified even more. Now I just put 1/2 cup of large flake oats in a bowl with a handful of raisins and a spoon of maple syrup, cover with boiling water and let sit till the water is absorbed. It's a bit chewy, tastes great with my canned peaches and yogurt on top. No weekly batch, no dirty pots, less electricity, all good.
If you're a big manly guy and you're really worried all the hard work you do can't be fueled by our porridge alone, then hard-boil an egg and have it on your way out the door.
If you want to take hot cereal to the next level, you can use a grinder and cook freshly-cracked grains.
