On the 10 in 10 diet, you can brag about how little garbage you create, as well as how low your grocery bill is. There's a lot of hidden carbon savings in not using all the stuff that generates garbage. Not using at all is much better than either recycling or re-using. We buy dry beans, lentils, grains, and flours in bulk. We have a dry trash bin and a small compost bucket. Neither ever smells. The trash and the recycling go to the dump (on our way past it) about once a month. The compost goes outside. Disposing of stinky wet garbage takes fuel and creates its own methane.

Here's a little meditation on garbage.
